UNC Charlotte proudly introduces the first Bachelor of Science in Sports Analytics in the Carolinas — and the Southeast — launching this fall. Building on the success of its undergraduate certificate in Sports Analytics, this cutting-edge program equips students with advanced skills in predictive analysis, data visualization, and sports-specific applications. Graduates will be prepared for careers in the fast-growing field of sports analytics.
The B.S. in Sports Analytics offers a highly marketable STEM degree with unparalleled hands-on opportunities. Students will engage in real-world applications through collaborations with Charlotte’s Division I Athletics and professional sports organizations such as the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, and Charlotte FC.
A Dynamic Partnership: School of Data Science + College of Health and Human Services
This first-of-its-kind degree is a collaboration between the School of Data Science (SDS) and the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS).
SDS advances data science education and research, offering degrees in Health Analytics, Data Science & Business Analytics. SDS prepares students to analyze and interpret data, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, and emphasizes ethical data practices.
The College of Health and Human Services’ Department of Applied Physiology, Health, and Clinical Sciences, which co-administers the sports analytics degree, promotes lifelong movement and health through research, education, and community engagement. It offers degrees in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Athletic Training, and Respiratory Therapy and Care.
Together, SDS and the College of Health and Human Services have created a hands-on, forward-thinking program that prepares students to excel in the evolving world of sports analytics.

Academic Programs
Bachelors of Science in Sports Analytics
The B.S. in Sports Analytics is an innovative STEM program that combines advanced technical training with community engagement through partnerships with campus teams and professional sports organizations. Building on the foundational certificate program, the degree includes coursework in data science, machine learning, and the anatomy and physiology of human performance.
Students complete 120 credit hours, including General Education (31-32 hours), major coursework (57-59 hours, with 6 overlapping General Education hours), and elective credit (29-32 hours). With no prerequisites beyond General Education and no additional accreditation or field requirements, the program ensures a streamlined path to graduation and prepares graduates for dynamic entry-level roles in sports analytics and other positions in this growing field.
Undergraduate Certificate in Sports Analytics
The Undergraduate Certificate in Sports Analytics equips students with essential skills in statistics, programming, and human performance in sports-specific contexts. This 12-credit program, consisting of three core courses and one elective, provides foundational training in statistics, data analysis, and human performance. It is ideal for students seeking to enhance their qualifications or gain a competitive edge in entry-level sports analytics positions. Graduates have secured roles with professional teams like the Philadelphia Phillies, Charlotte FC, and the Boston Bruins, highlighting the program’s success in launching sports analytics careers. The certificate complements degree programs and offers practical, career-focused training.
School of Data Science
The interdisciplinary School of Data Science at UNC Charlotte expands opportunities in the rapidly growing field of data science, welcoming students with diverse career interests. Established in 2013, the University’s Data Science Initiative was one of six transformative projects funded by the North Carolina General Assembly and the UNC Board of Governors. Since then, it has remained a top priority, with faculty securing nearly $20 million in state and industry research funding.
