Registration and Advising
Academic advising appointments are conducted virtually through Zoom and in-person in Colvard South, Suite 1028. Current students should schedule an appointment directly with your advisor using the Connect platform located on your Niner Portal. If you need assistance scheduling an appointment, please email The School of Data Science at sds-advising@charlotte.edu and we would be happy to assist.
Current UNC Charlotte students who are looking for assistance with enrolling in courses for the fall or spring are invited to submit this form. The form can be used for:
- Current majors to request a repeat authorization into a course
- Current majors who need a closed course to stay on track for planning graduation date
- All majors to request access to a SPOA or DTSC course that they are not allowed to enroll in on their own.
Once the form is submitted, the SPOA advising team will follow back up with your request.
Note: All new incoming students are required to go through the NSO (New Student Orientation) process which includes meeting with your academic advisor and enrolling in courses. New Students will not be seen by an academic advisor unless this process is followed.
Plans of Study
This Sports Analytics program is designed to be flexible for both four-year and transfer students. To aid students, the School of Data Science creates advising guides for students. The bulk of this document contains plans of study for various situations based on semester starting (fall, spring) and math placement level (ML1, ML2, ML3, ML4). It is meant to be used by current students, prospective students, and program academic advisors.
Advising guides will be coming soon!
Academic Policies
Taking Classes at Another Institution (Transient Study)
Transient students are UNC Charlotte degree-seeking students who are also taking courses at another college (typically during summer terms). UNC Charlotte is considered to be the home institution and the other school at which students are taking courses is the host institution. Students are required to obtain approval for transient study prior to taking any outside courses. Please see the transient study webpage for details about how to request a permit for Transient Study. More information can be found here.
Students should be aware that all Data Science courses MUST be completed at Charlotte and will not be approved to be taken at another institution.
Attempt Policy
Students are allowed to take all major courses twice to achieve an acceptable grade for the program. For a student to enroll in a course that you are currently enrolled in or have taken in the past, you must reach out to your academic advisor for permission. A withdrawal from a course does not count as an attempt. Students will be evaluated individually to see if a third attempt will be allowed.
Grade Replacement
Undergraduate students may replace up to two (2) courses (maximum of 8 hours) for grade replacement. Both grades will be reflected on the transcript. However, the higher of the two grades will be used in calculation of the GPA.

Academic Resources
University Center for Academic Excellence (UCAE)
The UCAE offers free services to help students develop academic success skills and master course content.
- Tutoring: Out-of-class assistance for select courses.
- Individual Consultations: One-on-one coaching to help students address their unique academic concerns.
- Supplemental Instruction: Group study sessions for courses with high attrition rates.
- Student Success: Support for students on academic probation or reinstated after suspension.
Writing Resource Center (WRC)
The Writing Resource Center (WRC) provides virtual and in-person support to all students at any stage of the writing process for any subject. Tutors can help you understand an assignment sheet, brainstorm, or even begin drafting an outline. If you’ve started writing but haven’t completed your first draft, we can give you feedback on direction and incorporating additional content. If you’ve already finished writing, we can give you some tips for revising or proofreading. Our goal is to help teach you to identify and understand the strengths and weaknesses of your writing, help you find answers, and help you learn how to research, write, revise, and proofread on your own. We want you to become a better writer by learning how to improve the quality of your writing overall, not just to improve the quality of one specific paper.
